Greg Chako - My World On Six Strings
My first solo guitar album was a result of my efforts to apply my compositional skill and musical voice to synthesizing a pre-composed classical style with improvisational jazz on some standard tunes from the “Great American Songbook.” Initially inspired by hearing Gene Bertoncini play his arrangement of “Body-n-Soul” for me in 2010, I was further encouraged by two semesters of private lessons with Harold Danko while pursuing my DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) at The Eastman School of Music.
These eight tracks also represent the musical culmination my academic preparation for a lecture-recital, required as part of my degree studies, in which I shared the techniques used to write these arrangements. That lecture-recital was nominated for being the best of the year. In departing from the ensemble writing I usually do, it was enjoyable “coming back to the guitar,” so to speak. Hopefully these arrangements provide not only a pleasant listening experience, but to my fellow players, some useful musical inspiration and insight.
“ . . . a total orchestra, the complete package . . . I love his arrangements!” - Gene Bertoncini
